Overview

The Civic Urban Farmer Program workshop series is a no-cost dynamic educational program developed by UC Davis Western Institute for Food Safety and Security and UC Cooperative Extension. Urban farming is a key element to reimagining a more vibrant and resilient local food system. This program uses a train the trainer model and a civic minded approach to provide urban farmers with technical assistance in growing, harvesting, handling, and marketing specialty crops to increase food production, food availability, land access, and land tenure. This year Professor of Cooperative Extension in Apiculture, Elina Niño, joins our program to support urban farmers with training on managing pollinators to increase crop yields and create value added products like honey!

This series of 10 modules is designed to grow the number of economically viable, small and be- ginning, multicultural, sustainable urban farmers in Northern California. We will also use the workshops as opportunities to hold time and space for growing community by creating space for urban farm networking, sharing cultural practices for food growing, and amplifying local voices and perspectives.

Interactive remote sessions will take place on zoom and in-person sessions with hands on demonstrations and group discussion will take place at local urban farms on weekends. There is no cost for participating in the. For those that complete all of the sessions the course will conclude with a graduation certificate ceremony.

Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshops

2023 Agenda will be announced soon.

Learn the essential skills of winter fruit tree pruning. Expert Dominic Allamano will guide learners through the craft of pruning, the tools that make it possible, and demonstrate the practice on fruit trees in community orchards. We will also explore how urban agroforestry can play a significant role in enhancing the resilience of our urban ecosystems and communities to a changing climate.

These workshops are intended to build knowledge and skills throughout the growing season. Workshop participants will be invited to private mentored pruning work parties in the summer at the same community orchards as we work together to care for community orchards throughout the year. Summer pruning workshops and work parties at the orchards will be offered in June and will build upon February and March training.
