This unique learning opportunity is being provided by the Western Institute of Food Safety and Security (WIFSS) at UC Davis, and is funded by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program (USDA-NADPRP). This workforce development initiative is designed to prepare the next generation of agricultural professionals to prevent and respond to animal disease outbreaks.
The conference will bring together students studying agriculture, animal science, pre-veterinary medicine, public health, and related fields to explore both everyday farm biosecurity practices and enhanced biosecurity measures that help reduce the spread of infectious diseases among livestock. A major emphasis of the program will be the Secure Food Supply (SFS) program, managed by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), highlighting the importance of collaboration between veterinary medicine, agriculture, and public health under the One Health framework.
This event will take place at the University of California, Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, offering students an immersive learning environment at one of the nation’s leading veterinary institutions in an effort to strengthen the agricultural workforce by equipping students with real-world knowledge and practical skills. As animal disease threats continue to impact livestock industries globally, training future professionals in biosecurity preparedness is increasingly important.
To reduce barriers to participation, students selected to attend will receive a $500 stipend. Hotel accommodations and meals are fully covered by the program, allowing participants to focus on learning and networking with minimal out-of-pocket expenses. The conference offers a unique opportunity for students to build professional experience, connect with industry experts, and gain valuable insight into careers supporting animal health and agricultural resilience.
Registration closes on Friday, May 15, or when all available spots are filled. Interested students are encouraged to submit their registration as soon as possible to secure a spot. The registration form may be accessed through this website: https://nadprp.wifsslearning.com/
