The Pew Charitable Trusts reports record-high numbers of antibiotics sold for use in meat and poultry. Could the practice of treating healthy animals with the same antibiotics used to treat sick people be contributing to the emergence of drug-resistant superbugs?
According to a report released by the CDC the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections is increasing in the United States. More than two million people in the U.S. get drug-resistant infections annually and about 23,000 die from these diseases that are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics.
Sysco Corporation is now under investigation by the USDA’s Office of Investigation, Enforcement and Audit, according to spokesman Richard McIntire.
The USDA would not specify when the department began looking into the food distributor…
